Neurodivergent Evaluation and Support
Every individual’s brain processes the world in unique ways. For some, these differences are described as neurodivergence which can include autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyspraxia, sensory processing differences, or other variations. Neurodivergence is not a deficit but a different way of experiencing, learning, and responding to the world.
In psychotherapy, we recognise that these differences can bring both strengths and challenges. A neurodivergent evaluation and support process focuses on:
-
Understanding the Individual
The first step is exploring each person’s experiences, strengths, and difficulties. This might involve discussions, questionnaires, developmental history, and collaboration with parents, schools, or other professionals. The goal is to build a clear picture of how the individual experiences daily life. -
Creating a Supportive Environment
Therapy is adapted to the person’s needs. For example, using visual supports, adjusting the pace, incorporating movement or sensory tools, and offering clear structure. The therapeutic space is designed to feel safe and predictable. -
Developing Self-Awareness and Coping Strategies
Support is centred on helping the person understand their own way of thinking, feeling, and learning. This may include emotion regulation skills, social communication supports, stress and anxiety management, and tools for navigating sensory sensitivities. -
Supporting Families and Caregivers
Parents and caregivers are an important part of the process. Therapy includes guidance on how to support a neurodivergent child or young adult at home and in school, building resilience and understanding within the family. -
Focusing on Strengths
While therapy addresses challenges, equal attention is given to celebrating unique strengths, talents, and ways of seeing the world. Building confidence and self-acceptance is a vital part of the work.
